Michael LaRosa, who previously served as press secretary to former First Lady Jill Biden, announced he will not support Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed in an unusual party defection. LaRosa’s decision centers on El-Sayed’s continued association with content creator Hasan Piker, whose 2019 livestream comments about the September 11 terrorist attacks sparked widespread condemnation.
The controversy stems from Piker’s statement during a 2019 broadcast that “America deserved 9/11.” El-Sayed has campaigned alongside Piker and has defended the partnership by asserting that shared appearances do not constitute endorsement of all statements made by the streamer.
LaRosa’s objection carries personal weight, rooted in his connection to a September 11 victim. He disclosed that his best friend’s mother perished in the attacks after jumping from the 95th floor of the World Trade Center rather than remain in the burning structure. “I won’t defend or support anyone who is too cowardly to stand up to extremists who think the mother of my best friend, who jumped from 95 stories because the alternative was worse, deserved what happened to her,” LaRosa wrote on social media.
The rift reveals deepening tensions within Democratic ranks over how party members should address extremist rhetoric and the acceptable boundaries of political association. Such divisions, particularly in a competitive Senate race like Michigan’s, could influence voter behavior and alter the political landscape in Washington.
