Athletics Shortstop Jacob Wilson Breaks MLB Record With 111 Consecutive Errorless Games

Jacob Wilson of the Oakland Athletics has established a new Major League Baseball record for his position, extending his errorless streak to 111 consecutive games at shortstop. The 24-year-old surpassed Baltimore Orioles legend Mike Bordick, who previously held the mark with 110 consecutive games without a fielding mistake in 2002. Wilson’s last error occurred on July 6, 2025, during a matchup against the San Francisco Giants.

The Athletics defeated the Boston Red Sox 4-3 on Sunday at Fenway Park, snapping a 12-game losing streak and providing the backdrop for Wilson’s milestone achievement. During the game, Wilson recorded five defensive plays, including two popup outs, two ground ball plays, and a pivotal middle infield position on a 4-6-3 double play. One particularly impressive defensive effort came when he ranged deep into the hole to field a grounder hit by Ceddanne Rafaela and threw out the runner at first base.

Wilson credits his father, Jack Wilson, a 12-year major league shortstop, for instilling a defense-first mentality from an early age. “He’s a very defensive-first guy for me growing up by teaching me defense first before the hitting side of things,” Wilson explained in the clubhouse following Sunday’s victory. The younger Wilson maintains his preparation standards religiously, taking ground balls before every game in which he plays shortstop.

Athletics pitcher J.T. Ginn emphasized the dedication required to achieve such sustained excellence in the field. “It’s pretty amazing the way he prepares and works. That stuff doesn’t come by chance,” Ginn said. Wilson acknowledged the message his record sends to young players nationwide, underscoring the importance of consistent preparation and hard work in developing elite defensive skills.
