Hunter Biden disclosed in a BBC interview aired Friday that his father’s prostate cancer has progressed beyond the original diagnosis, spreading to his bones and causing substantial suffering. The younger Biden characterized the condition as “very painful” and “very debilitating,” while expressing sadness at witnessing his father’s deterioration despite the former president’s continued public appearances.
Joe Biden announced his Stage 4 prostate cancer diagnosis in May 2025, months after leaving office. At that time, doctors assigned him a Gleason score of 9, a measurement indicating aggressive disease characteristics and suggesting the malignancy may have been present for years before detection.
Dr. Ezekiel J. Emanuel, vice provost and oncologist at the University of Pennsylvania, indicated the cancer likely existed when Biden assumed the presidency in 2021, with no development occurring in the preceding 100 to 200 days before the public announcement. The medical assessment appeared in the American Journal of Medical Care.
First lady Jill Biden told hosts of ABC’s “The View” in June that the disease has slowed her husband’s pace, though he maintains his schedule. She attributed the slowdown to the combination of Stage 4 cancer, his age of 83, and the effects of ongoing medications.
