Inter Miami CF issued a condolences statement Saturday after Jorge Messi, the 68-year-old father of team captain Lionel Messi, died in his native Argentina. Grupo Centro, operator of Sanatorio Centro hospital in Rosario, confirmed Jorge Messi’s death occurred Saturday morning. The Major League Soccer franchise expressed its sympathies in an official statement, saying “Our hearts are with our captain, Leo, and the entire Messi family.”
Multiple soccer organizations and clubs joined Inter Miami in paying respects to the Messi family. CONMEBOL, South America’s continental soccer confederation, and Club Atlético Newell’s Old Boys in Rosario each released separate statements of condolence. Jorge Messi had played as a midfielder in Newell’s Old Boys youth programs before building a career as his son’s representative.
As Lionel Messi’s agent, Jorge Messi negotiated major professional contracts throughout his son’s career at FC Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, and Inter Miami CF. The Messi family had disclosed that Jorge was dealing with unspecified health complications. Earlier during the FIFA World Cup, Lionel Messi had indicated he was struggling emotionally, telling reporters he had endured “difficult, complicated days” tied to matters outside football.
