Chicago Sky guard DiJonai Carrington drew an ejection from Saturday’s contest after a flagrant 2 foul against Indiana Fever forward Sophie Cunningham. With roughly two minutes remaining in the opening quarter, Carrington struck Cunningham in the face while the Fever player drove toward the basket, prompting referees to upgrade the infraction following review.
Minutes after her ejection, Carrington posted a message on Threads referencing “white privilege” and tagging the Fever organization. The athlete did not clarify whether her comment targeted Cunningham, the officiating decision, or the franchise itself, and she did not mention Cunningham by name in the post.
The incident marked another flashpoint between the two players, following a 2024 playoff encounter when Carrington’s elbow struck Clark in the eye, resulting in a black eye. Cunningham has remained at the center of broader debate regarding transgender athletes in women’s sports, a position defended by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt.
Carrington and Cunningham’s history extends beyond court conflicts. The Sky guard previously mocked Clark’s playing style and criticized Indiana fans as “the nastiest in the W” after receiving racist online abuse. Carrington has also made headlines for political activism, donning anti-Trump apparel and calling on WNBA players to oppose policies affecting women and LGBTQ communities.
