Federal Government Targets Birth Tourism Industry Following Trump Executive Orders

President Donald Trump has signed executive orders targeting the controversial practice of birth tourism, in which foreign nationals enter the United States specifically to deliver children who will obtain American citizenship. The administration characterizes the practice as an abuse of the immigration system, arguing that individuals fraudulently use tourist visas to circumvent immigration law for reproductive purposes.

A North Miami Beach medical clinic has drawn federal scrutiny following a Local 10 investigation last year that prompted congressional review. Dr. Wladimir Lorentz, the facility’s chief pediatrician, has actively marketed maternity services online in Spanish and Portuguese to prospective mothers seeking obstetric care in the United States.

Trump stated in the executive order that “citizenship is not a commodity to be acquired through calculated exploitation and evasion of the immigration law,” pledging enhanced enforcement mechanisms. The administration cited a report estimating approximately 77,000 individuals entered the country on tourist visas in 2023 for purposes it describes as fraudulent, including childbirth.

The new orders expand government authority to deny entry or initiate removal proceedings against individuals who participate in or intend to participate in birth tourism activities. Trump simultaneously signed a second executive order restricting birthright citizenship, despite the U.S. Supreme Court’s previous rejection of similar limitations on the constitutional practice.
