Testimony Details Troubled Past of Teen Defendant in Fatal Crash Case

The sentencing phase for 19-year-old Jah’Kobe Bessent resumed Friday with testimony from his stepmother and a clinical psychologist addressing his troubled childhood and behavioral history. Nicole Bessent described efforts by the defendant’s father to seek custody after recognizing behavioral problems during Bessent’s early years. The court previously heard accounts from family members detailing the instability of his home environment and his father’s attempts to intervene.

A psychologist testified that Bessent’s difficult upbringing combined with an ADHD diagnosis contributed to circumstances that led to his criminal conduct. The mental health professional also informed the court of physical abuse occurring within the defendant’s household. School records presented to the court documented more than 40 behavioral incidents throughout Bessent’s educational career.

Bessent faces sentencing for his role in an August 2022 vehicular crash that resulted in the death of Maria Tellez Valderrabano, a 35-year-old mother of three. At age 15, prosecutors allege Bessent operated a stolen vehicle while evading law enforcement following a residential burglary. According to authorities, Bessent and a co-defendant burglarized a home while occupants slept, then stole the vehicle before the fatal collision occurred.

The court is scheduled to hear statements from Bessent himself and members of the victim’s family later Friday as the sentencing proceeding concludes.
