Michigan Couple Charged After Explosive Device Found in Neighbor’s Yard

Authorities in Michigan have charged a husband-and-wife team from St. Clair Shores with multiple felonies stemming from an incident in which an explosive device was allegedly hurled into a neighbor’s property. Jason Showers, 45, and Megan Showers, 38, could each face decades of incarceration if convicted, according to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office.

Prosecutors allege that Megan Showers ignited a red cylindrical device bearing the words “BYE BYE” before her husband threw it into the yard of their 72-year-old neighbor on Monday. The neighbor managed to extinguish the device before it caused harm, law enforcement said.

A subsequent search of the couple’s home uncovered firearms, ammunition, and materials used to construct explosive devices, prosecutors stated. Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido emphasized the severity of the allegations, noting the victim’s age and the threat posed to community safety.

Jason Showers faces four primary felony charges: placing explosives near property and possessing bombs with unlawful intent, each carrying a maximum 15-year sentence. He also stands accused of being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm and ammunition, crimes punishable by up to five years each.

Prosecutors additionally charged Jason Showers with two counts of felony firearm possession, with each count carrying a mandatory consecutive two-year sentence. Given his status as a habitual offender with at least four prior felony convictions, a judge could impose a life sentence if he is convicted on any of the four top charges.

Megan Showers is charged with placing explosives near property and possessing bombs with unlawful intent, charges identical to those against her husband and carrying the same 15-year maximum penalty.

Both defendants appeared in court Wednesday. Jason Showers’ bond was set at $100,000 cash only, and he remains in custody at the Macomb County Jail pending resolution of his case. Should he post bail, he must wear a GPS monitoring device and is barred from his home and contact with his wife or the neighbor.

Megan Showers received a $20,000 bond with the option to pay 10 percent through a bail bondsman. She is permitted to remain at the marital residence but cannot communicate with her husband or the neighbor. A probable cause hearing is scheduled for August 14.
