The Chicago Sky released a formal statement addressing a scheduled demonstration set to occur outside the United Center on Saturday before their matchup against the Indiana Fever. The organization emphasized its commitment to fostering an inclusive environment while maintaining its primary focus on basketball and delivering quality fan experiences, noting that all attendees must adhere to standard venue safety protocols and conduct guidelines.
Saturday’s event will mark the fourth organized rally supporting Cunningham since she publicly advocated for safeguarding women’s sports from transgender athletes in an opinion piece published in ESPN last month. Previous demonstrations have already occurred at Fever games in Seattle, Portland, and Minneapolis, with organizers already planning a fifth rally in New York ahead of an August 22 game against the Liberty.
The rallies have intensified national discourse surrounding transgender participation in women’s sports, coinciding with increased scrutiny of four WNBA head coaches who have addressed the controversy. The attention also follows former NBA first-round pick Enes Kanter Freedom’s announcement Friday that he will declare for the 2027 WNBA Draft.
The Seattle rally previously resulted in disciplinary action against Storm co-owner Celeste Keaton after two teenage Cunningham supporters claimed she made disparaging remarks to them courtside. The scheduled demonstrations suggest the debate will persist beyond Chicago, with planned activism continuing in major WNBA markets.
