The NFL’s 2024 season officially commenced with the Hall of Fame game, marking the return of Carrie Underwood as the voice behind Sunday Night Football’s opening theme for her 14th consecutive year. NBC and the country music star have introduced a rock-oriented direction for the upcoming season, drawing from Underwood’s well-documented affinity for rock music to reimagine the iconic SNF anthem.
Tripp Dixon, creative director for the SNF opening theme, explained the creative decision in a statement released alongside the new performance. “This season, we’ve drawn inspiration from Carrie’s deep, well-documented love of rock music — a perfect fit since our Sunday Night Football anthem was born from pure rock ‘n’ roll: Joan Jett and the Blackhearts’ ‘I Hate Myself for Loving You,'” Dixon said. The updated theme aims to merge Underwood’s high-energy delivery with the legendary rock foundation of the original composition.
The 43-year-old performer demonstrated her continued vocal prowess during the debut performance, delivering what observers described as elite execution. The return of Underwood and play-by-play announcer Cris Collinsworth signals the official commencement of the NFL broadcast season on the network.
