Tommy McClelland, Purdue’s newly appointed athletic director, generated immediate controversy during his introductory press conference Thursday by making dismissive comments about Indiana’s athletics program. McClelland, who previously held the same position at Rice from 2023 to 2026, told recruits and student-athletes that they should pursue championships at Purdue rather than travel down the road to Bloomington.

The Hoosiers captured the national football championship in January, boasting coach Curt Cignetti and quarterback Shedeur Sanders, who was selected first overall in the 2026 NFL Draft.
