Mets rookie left-hander Jefry Yan marked a milestone moment with a flamboyant on-field celebration during his major league debut Wednesday night. The 29-year-old pitcher leaped into the air with his legs extended, landed on the pitcher’s mound, and slapped the grass with his left hand while momentarily dropping to one knee.
Yan’s acrobatic display came after he struck out pinch-hitter Angel Martínez on an 88.7 mph slider for the called third strike that opened Cleveland’s sixth inning. The pitcher then straightened up with his feet together and raised both arms overhead, a signature move he had previously executed during spring training play.
The celebration proved warranted as Yan navigated through a precarious situation in the following moments. After Martínez’s strikeout, the Guardians filled the bases with two singles and a walk, yet Yan escaped the jam unscathed with another strikeout and a ground ball to end the inning.
Yan exited the mound with animated flair, repeatedly striking his glove with his palm as he headed toward the dugout. New York’s 6-5 victory gave the visiting team a 4-3 advantage when Yan departed the field to a chorus of boos from the home crowd.
