Man Charged With Attempted Murder After Machete Attack on Sister in Margate Home

Authorities in Broward County have arrested Ruben Altidore, 36, following a violent machete attack on his sister in Margate, a community situated approximately 40 miles north of Miami. The assault occurred Monday as the victim slept in her bedroom alongside her 1-year-old daughter, according to an arrest report filed by investigators.

During the attack, Altidore repeatedly struck his sister with the blade while allegedly shouting, “Oh my God, why aren’t you dead yet?” according to the arrest report. The victim sustained catastrophic injuries including a 10-inch wound penetrating to the bone on her right thigh, a four-inch laceration to her right hand with possible amputation of four fingers, and near-complete severing of her left thumb and index finger.

The victim managed to escape the home and sought assistance from a neighbor, her screams captured on nearby surveillance video. Her 1-year-old daughter, though found covered in blood at the scene, was not physically injured, investigators determined.

Altidore was detained Monday and charged with attempted felony murder, aggravated child abuse, and violation of probation. He remains held at the Broward County Main Jail without bond. Authorities recovered a machete with apparent bloodstains beneath a bed and a machete sheath in the kitchen, but have not established a clear motive for the attack.
