Elijah Zion Bieniemy, 27, was taken into custody on July 26 after police responded to a residence on the 20000 block of Northpark Drive in Ashburn, Virginia, where his mother had been shot. According to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, officers arrived at the home in the evening and arrested Bieniemy on charges of malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling.
Two days before the shooting, a person believed to be Bieniemy called police from the family residence claiming his parents had confiscated his weapons and would not return them. The 27-year-old told dispatchers he could not access firearms from “his parents,” stating that as a certified UFC fighter, he needed the ability to defend himself. He also mentioned concerns about his CPR certification and his ability to assist others in emergencies.
According to an incident report obtained by The Athletic, Bieniemy’s parents had stipulated that he must surrender his firearms if he wished to remain in the home, with the condition that he could retrieve them when necessary. The caller complained that his parents refused to return the weapons when he requested them for shooting range use.
Mia Bieniemy was hospitalized with gunshot wounds following the incident and was initially in stable condition before being transferred out of intensive care. Her son remains held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center.
Court records indicate Bieniemy will not appear in court until completing a mental health competency evaluation. Legal filings note that he “appears to suffer from significant mental health issues” and “does not appear able to assist in his own defense at the present time.”
Eric Bieniemy, 56, has served as the Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive coordinator since 2018, excepting a period when he worked with the Washington Commanders, Chicago Bears, and UCLA’s football program. During his tenure with the Chiefs from 2018 to 2022, he directed one of the NFL’s most prolific offenses, helping the team win two Super Bowls and establish itself as an AFC power.
