NBC has confirmed that Carrie Underwood will reprise her role as the vocalist behind Sunday Night Football’s signature opening sequence for the 2024 season and beyond. The eight-time Grammy Award winner will perform the refreshed rendition of “Waiting All Day for Sunday Night” when the primetime broadcasts resume Sept. 13 with a matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants. This marks her 14th consecutive year in the position, solidifying her status as one of the most recognizable voices in professional football.
The announcement generated widespread enthusiasm across social media, with fans expressing excitement about Underwood’s continued partnership with the network. Several Instagram commenters urged NBC to expand her role, suggesting she headline the Super Bowl halftime show and praising her return as a highlight of the football season. The renewed commitment reflects her established connection with viewers who have watched her evolve in the role over more than a decade.
This year’s opening will feature a production overhaul with a rock-influenced aesthetic, according to NBC executives. The sequence was shot in multiple settings including a professional recording studio, an intimate concert venue, and a full stadium, creating what Underwood characterized as a “rock star fever dream” atmosphere for viewers.
Underwood assumed the Sunday Night Football duties in 2013 following Faith Hill’s departure from the role. Some social media users have begun advocating for emerging country artist Ella Langley to eventually take over the opening, though the majority of responses centered on celebrating Underwood’s continued presence on the broadcasts.
