Brandon Aiyuk’s employment status with the San Francisco 49ers remained unresolved as the franchise opened training camp without clarification on his future. The All-Pro receiver has sat on the reserve/left squad list since the conclusion of 2025 and would require NFL reinstatement approval to compete again in 2026 following his absence throughout the previous season.
The conflict between Aiyuk and the 49ers intensified last July when team management nullified his guaranteed contract compensation after he declined to participate in rehabilitation sessions for a torn ACL, MCL and meniscus in his right knee. The standoff has persisted for approximately one year, with Aiyuk using social media to express his frustration about the deteriorating relationship.
Roddy White, a former wide receiver who compiled 10,863 receiving yards during his 11-year career with the Atlanta Falcons, publicly criticized San Francisco’s approach. “I think this situation has been handled wrongly by the 49ers,” White said to Hard Rock Bet, adding that team leadership should have displayed greater patience and worked harder to facilitate his return to playing condition.
White contended that the 49ers’ strategy may have damaged their ability to trade Aiyuk. “When you have a guy who is angry and just wants to leave, it’s hard to get any compensation for him,” the former player stated.
Aiyuk’s apparent interest in joining the Washington Commanders has reportedly diminished following his public criticism of quarterback Jayden Daniels, though Daniels downplayed any unresolved tension by indicating they addressed matters privately. The two were college teammates at Arizona State in 2019.
49ers general manager John Lynch indicated the organization would concentrate exclusively on its current roster during training camp, telling reporters on July 25 that the team wished Aiyuk and his family well. The franchise recently re-signed receiver Deebo Samuel following an injury to Ricky Pearsall that required placement on injured reserve.
