Bella Thorne Says Victim-Blaming After Nude Photo Blackmail Attempt ‘Really Broke Me’

Bella Thorne faced a barrage of public scorn following her 2019 decision to release private nude photographs herself rather than allow an alleged blackmailer to do so. The former Disney Channel actress said the wave of victim-blaming accusations that followed her preemptive action inflicted deeper emotional damage than the extortion attempt itself, describing the experience as profoundly traumatic.

When a hacker threatened to release intimate images, Thorne took control of the situation by posting the photos on social media. During an appearance on the podcast “Call Her Daddy,” the now-28-year-old recalled her straightforward rationale: “I just did an honest Twitter post. I just kind of set it out as … you’re not gonna keep taking this from me, so here it is.”

The backlash proved devastating, with critics suggesting Thorne had fabricated the entire incident or was seeking attention. “People saying, ‘Well, you did this. You are faking it. You just wanna show us your t–s,'” Thorne recounted to host Alexandra Cooper. “That to me, like, really broke me then. That like, really, really broke me.”

The Federal Bureau of Investigation eventually contacted Thorne after becoming aware of the extortion scheme and collected data from her home to build their case. Working with investigators for more than a year, Thorne provided screenshots and communications that proved instrumental in identifying the suspect through his distinctive writing patterns and methods of operation.

“So if I had not posted those screenshots … they wouldn’t have caught him,” Thorne said, noting that her willingness to share evidence directly accelerated the investigation’s progress and helped authorities establish the suspect’s criminal identity.
