Onelio Castro-Arroyo, 58, disrupted proceedings Wednesday at the Richard E. Gerstein Justice Building in Allapattah by shouting in Spanish at Miami-Dade County Circuit Judge Ellen Sue Venzer. The outburst occurred during a plea hearing where prosecutors offered Castro-Arroyo a deal on a second-degree murder charge. Castro-Arroyo rejected the agreement, telling the court he would not accept any plea terms.
Castro-Arroyo stands accused of fatally stabbing his estranged wife, Yanelis González, 45, a total of 16 times inside a parked vehicle at Country Club Villas Park north of Miami Lakes in 2019. Their 7-year-old daughter, who has been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, was present during the attack and is listed as a witness in the case.
Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Castro-Arroyo on May 21, 2019. Prosecutors charged him with second-degree murder with a weapon and tampering with evidence; the tampering charge was later dropped. During Wednesday’s hearing, Castro-Arroyo struck a courtroom divider with his handcuffed hand and accused the judge of attempting to convict him by force.
Castro-Arroyo, a convicted felon with five prior convictions dating to 2014, has been in Florida Department of Corrections custody since November 2015. His next trial hearing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on October 19.
