Seven people, including four children, killed in strike on Russian Black Sea beach resort

A strike on a densely populated beach in the Russian Black Sea resort village of Arkhipo-Osipovka near Gelendzhik killed seven people on Monday, including four children, and wounded numerous others, according to Russian officials. Video documentation of the incident showed beachgoers fleeing in panic as an explosion erupted on the sand, sending debris and smoke across the area.

Russia’s diplomatic mission in Geneva attributed the attack to a Ukrainian drone and characterized it as a deliberate strike against civilians. Regional Governor Veniamin Kondratyev said emergency services responded to the scene and noted that preliminary investigations suggested some fatalities resulted from “falling drone debris.” He condemned what he called a “cynical and inhumane terrorist attack” against people uninvolved in military operations.

Ukraine’s Defense Forces officer Andriy Kovalenko countered that Russian air defense systems were responsible for the casualties. He stated that a drone intercepted over the beach by Russian air defenses sent shrapnel onto civilians below, arguing that Moscow’s decision to position defensive installations near populated areas created the deadly situation.

Kovalenko further claimed that Ukraine targets Russian military-industrial infrastructure to disrupt Moscow’s war financing capabilities. He asserted that President Vladimir Putin bore responsibility for the deaths, stating that the conflict itself and decisions surrounding air defense placement caused civilian harm.
