Legislators at the Mato Grosso state house in Cuiabá encountered unexpected visitors on July 30 when a family of capybaras made their way into the building’s halls. The large rodents moved through the entrance with notable composure as staff members attempted to guide them back outside, capturing the moment on video that quickly circulated among observers.
Legislative employee Nayara Bueno recorded the animals’ unhurried passage through the government complex and noted to The Associated Press that such occurrences had become routine. “They show up here quite often, so we’ve gotten used to seeing them,” Bueno remarked, indicating the regularity of wildlife interactions at the site.
Officials confirmed that the capybaras caused no structural damage or disruption to the legislature’s operations despite their presence during voting preparations. The facility’s location adjacent to a natural park housing native wildlife has created straightforward pathways for animals to access the surrounding governmental grounds.
Capybaras, the planet’s largest living rodents, are semiaquatic creatures originating from South America and typically inhabiting wetlands and aquatic regions. These highly gregarious mammals, which commonly weigh approximately 175 pounds, have cultivated substantial followings on social media platforms due to their famously placid demeanor around other species and humans.
