ESPN Analyst Doubles Down on Caitlin Clark Ranking Despite Recent Dominant Performance

ESPN analyst David Dennis Jr. has stood by his earlier assessment that Caitlin Clark does not belong in the top tier of WNBA guards, even as the Indiana Fever guard has delivered one of the strongest stretches of her professional career. In remarks made this week, Dennis reasserted his position while acknowledging that Clark’s recent performance warrants a slight adjustment in his ranking.

Between July 17 and August 2, Clark appeared in seven games and averaged 26.1 points and 8.6 assists per game while leading Indiana to a 6-1 record. She earned WNBA Player of the Month honors and scored 45 points in a single contest during that span. The performance prompted renewed scrutiny of Dennis’ earlier claim that Clark’s playing style did not translate to winning basketball.

Dennis revised his previous stance to place Clark at fourth among WNBA guards, behind Paige Bueckers, Olivia Miles, and Kelsey Plum. He argued that his original assessment remained valid because Clark had not yet achieved her recent success three weeks prior, while other players he ranked ahead of her have since underperformed. Dennis also criticized observers who praised Clark after one game in which he contended she was not the court’s top guard.

Clark has compiled seven career games with at least 25 points, 10 assists, and five made three-pointers. The entire WNBA historical record outside of Clark’s games contains only four such performances, highlighting the rarity of her statistical accomplishments at the position.
