The Los Angeles Dodgers’ acquisition of ace Tarik Skubal at the 2026 trade deadline has reignited familiar complaints about the franchise’s spending power and competitive advantages. Skubal, however, rejected those concerns during comments to reporters Monday, offering a pointed defense of the organization that just acquired him.
The left-hander made clear he has no sympathy for those who fault Los Angeles for its aggressive roster moves. “Every team could trade for me,” Skubal said. “I don’t sympathize with people that blame the Dodgers for anything they’ve done. It’s a winning org… I really don’t sympathize with people that are complaining because the Dodgers do all the right things.”
Skubal arrives in Los Angeles fresh off back-to-back AL Cy Young Awards in 2024 and 2025, bringing a 2.79 ERA and 116 strikeouts through 16 starts this season. He is scheduled to make his Dodgers debut Tuesday at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs after watching Sunday’s game from the dugout at Dodger Stadium.
The pitcher’s comments underscore a recurring debate in baseball: whether the Dodgers’ success reflects organizational excellence or an unfair financial advantage that demands a salary cap to restore competitive balance. Skubal’s perspective suggests the former—that Los Angeles simply executed better drafting, player development, and strategic trades than its competitors.
From Skubal’s standpoint, other teams had equal opportunity to pursue his services. The Dodgers’ approach was neither secretive nor exclusive, but rather the product of consistent decision-making aimed at sustained winning.
