Panthers Defer Decision on Bryce Young’s Long-Term Deal as QB Enters Fourth Season

The Carolina Panthers are staying quiet regarding quarterback Bryce Young’s long-term contract status as the 25-year-old prepares for his fourth year in the league. Brandt Tilis, the team’s executive vice president of football operations, said Monday that Young has “ascended” but stressed that his ultimate potential remains unclear at this stage of his development.

Young bounced back impressively last season following a mid-season benching in year two, posting 3,011 passing yards, 23 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while compiling an 8-8 record as a starter. The 2023 first overall pick led the Panthers to an NFC South division title, demonstrating marked improvement from his earlier struggles in the professional ranks.

Young currently carries a contract worth slightly over $12 million for the upcoming season, with the Panthers holding a fifth-year option worth an estimated $25.9 million in 2027. Tilis declined to specify whether the organization would pursue an extension before or after the season, characterizing such discussions as internal matters involving general manager Dan Morgan, head coach Dave Canales and owner David Tepper.

Head coach Dave Canales praised Young’s development during training camp, noting faster decision-making and improved chemistry with receivers. Canales said Young is “eliminating things before the snap” and throwing more anticipatory passes, positioning him well for continued growth in 2025.

Young will sit out Thursday’s Hall of Fame game preseason opener against Arizona, along with most starters. Kenny Pickett will start the contest with backup Haynes King also expected to see action.
