Senior House Democrat Calls Party to Combat Rising Socialist Influence Within Ranks

Rep. Tom Suozzi, a vulnerable New York Democrat facing a competitive reelection battle, is urging his party to confront what he views as an increasingly powerful socialist faction threatening the Democratic brand. Speaking to Fox News Digital, Suozzi rejected any alignment with socialist ideology and stressed the need for Democrats to distance themselves from organizations like the Democratic Socialists of America.

Drawing a parallel to how Republicans have dealt with their conservative Freedom Caucus, Suozzi argued that Democrats must actively counter the DSA’s appropriation of the word “democratic” in its name. He contended the party should publicly denounce the terminology and make clear that moderate, capitalist Democrats represent the true identity of the organization.

DSA-backed candidates have increasingly won primary races across the country, including victories over incumbent progressive representatives in New York and Colorado, providing ammunition for Republican arguments about Democratic disunity. As the GOP works to exploit perceived fractures within the party, Suozzi warned colleagues not to dismiss the trend as insignificant or isolated to safely liberal districts.

Suozzi, co-chair of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus, represents a shrinking moderate wing within his party. His Long Island district, anchored in wealthy suburbs outside New York City, voted for President Donald Trump in 2024, making his seat a prime Republican target heading into the midterms.

He advised Democrats to campaign on substantive policy criticisms rather than personal attacks on Trump, focusing on bread-and-butter concerns like grocery prices, fuel costs, health insurance, and housing affordability. Such messaging, Suozski suggested, presents a stronger case to voters than focusing on the president himself.

To counter the socialist narrative, Suozzi launched an initiative called The Promise to America, which asks Democratic candidates to pledge support for capitalism, safety, and mainstream values. The effort currently includes 10 congressional members and is working to secure endorsements from 200 state and local officials and 10 Democratic candidates nationwide.

Suozski is competing against Republican former state legislator Mike LiPetri, who has earned Trump’s endorsement in the race to flip the seat to GOP control. The contest is shaping up as a barometer for moderate Democratic strength heading into the 2024 general election.
