Man Held Without Bail After “Today” Show Intrusion, Probation Violation

A man who allegedly infiltrated NBC’s “Today” show studios and directed a racial slur at anchor Craig Melvin was denied bail Wednesday after breaching the conditions of his supervised release. Andrew Truelove, 41, was remanded to Rikers Island jail complex following the probation violation tied to a criminal mischief conviction from May, according to court filings.

Truelove is accused of gaining unauthorized access to a vestibule adjacent to Studio 1A at Rockefeller Center on July 16, where he approached Melvin and allegedly used a racial slur. Court documents indicate he was initially seeking Al Roker. Truelove now faces felony burglary and misdemeanor menacing charges classified as hate crimes in connection with the incident.

The defendant’s criminal background extends beyond New York. In 2007, he was convicted of attempting to abduct an 8-year-old child from a Norfolk, Virginia school and received a 10-year sentence with six years suspended, followed by a decade of probation. A psychiatrist testified during those proceedings that Truelove displayed bipolar disorder symptoms and had discontinued his medications.

Virginia court records document additional charges including trespassing, property destruction, bomb threats, and multiple probation violations throughout his history. Following the July incident, NBC announced it had terminated a security guard and initiated a comprehensive review of its security protocols. Melvin stated publicly that he was unharmed and thanked supporters for their concern.
