Payton Dean Carroll, 25, of Barry, Texas, has been charged with felony second-degree cattle theft following an investigation into the alleged fraudulent purchase of livestock from a regional supplier. The Leon County Sheriff’s Department announced the charges Saturday after determining that Carroll obtained 77 head of cattle from Buffalo Livestock Marketing, Inc. using worthless checks.
The total value of the alleged scheme reached $159,604.03, according to the sheriff’s office. The Criminal Investigations Division initiated its probe on July 17 after receiving notification of the suspected crime.
Multiple law enforcement agencies contributed to the investigation’s success, the sheriff’s department noted in a statement. The Buffalo Police Department, Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, and Navarro County Sheriff’s Office all provided assistance in bringing the case forward.
