Thorbjornsen Claims First PGA Tour Victory at Final Rocket Classic in Detroit

Michael Thorbjornsen captured his maiden PGA Tour victory Sunday at the Rocket Classic in Detroit, firing a 7-under 63 in the final round to finish 18 under par and claim the trophy by two strokes. The 24-year-old sealed the win with a clutch 26-foot birdie putt on his final hole, advancing to the FedEx Cup playoffs in the process.

Thorbjornsen entered the day three shots behind leader Davis Riley but quickly closed the deficit. He surged into the lead at the 14th hole with his third birdie in a six-hole stretch, ultimately carding a bogey-free round despite challenging weather conditions that included rain and wind.

Xander Schauffele finished second after a 65, while Riley slipped to third place with a 70, hampered by four bogeys including three in his first six holes. Rasmus Hojgaard claimed fourth at 4-under, with Hideki Matsuyama, Matt Wallace, and Kristoffer Ventura tied for fifth.

Thorbjornsen becomes the eighth first-time winner this season on the PGA Tour and the second consecutive winner, following Jackson Koivun’s victory at the 3M Open. Born in Cleveland and raised in Massachusetts, the Stanford graduate previously won the 2018 U.S. Junior Amateur.

The tournament marked the eighth and final Rocket Classic, as the Detroit-based company decided not to continue its sponsorship under the PGA Tour’s new model launching in 2028. Rocket Mortgage declined to exercise its option, citing unwillingness to spend $15 million annually for second-tier status or double costs for elite-tier participation.
