Chiefs Rookie Wide Receiver Cyrus Allen Clears Medical Tests After Violent Training Camp Collision

Kansas City Chiefs rookie wide receiver Cyrus Allen avoided serious injury Saturday when he collided with defensive back Kaiir Elam during a special teams drill, according to initial medical evaluations. Tests revealed Allen suffered only a shin bruise with no fractures or torn tissue, ESPN reported, citing league sources. The fifth-round draft pick remained on the ground briefly before being assisted onto a cart by team staff.

The incident occurred during a pooch punt practice when both players, lined up as gunners, converged near the goal line while pursuing the ball. Elam recovered quickly and departed the field under his own power, while Allen appeared visibly shaken by the contact before covering his face with his jersey. His status ahead of the upcoming season remained unclear immediately after the collision.

Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub acknowledged the alarming nature of the accident while emphasizing Allen’s strong performance to that point. “I hate to see somebody get hurt, especially on a special teams drill,” Toub said. Toub noted that Allen had been performing well both offensively and on special teams assignments, working as both a gunner and returner while establishing himself as a potential contributor for the franchise.

Allen had impressed during early camp activities, leading Kansas City’s receiving corps in catches during 11-on-11 periods alongside quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Fellow Chiefs receiver Xavier Worthy also exited Saturday’s practice with a shoulder concern after landing awkwardly while catching a deep pass near the end zone. Worthy previously underwent offseason surgery to address a right shoulder injury sustained last season against the Los Angeles Chargers.
