Canine Athletes Showcase Skills at Annual World Dog Surfing Championship in California

Hundreds of spectators gathered at a Northern California beach Saturday to watch skilled canines compete in the World Dog Surfing Championships, the event’s tenth consecutive year. Held in Pacifica, approximately 14 miles south of San Francisco, the competition drew dogs ranging from small spaniels to large labradors, all vying for top honors as spectators cheered and barked in support.

Dogs were evaluated based on their ability to maintain balance on surfboards, wave selection, and overall composure during rides. Human handlers assisted the animals by identifying optimal waves and positioning the boards for launch, while the canines wore brightly colored life vests for safety during their performances in the water.

Competition was organized into heats by dog size—small, medium, and large categories—with top performers from each heat advancing to championship rounds. The day’s events also featured tandem competitions allowing multiple dogs to share surfboards, as well as contests pairing dogs with human surfers.

Sophia Sadlowski of Huntington Beach brought her Miniature Pinscher, Rusty, to the event after the dog unexpectedly took to surfing as a puppy. Sporting a green life jacket adorned with animal print and a shark fin, Rusty competed in small-sized and tandem divisions, having placed third in his first competition at just four months old.

The championship incorporates a pet adoption event and fundraising activities supporting local animal welfare organizations alongside the surfing competitions.
