Vincent Pastore, a seasoned character actor whose career spanned four decades and who became widely recognized for his portrayal of a mobster turned federal informant on one of television’s most acclaimed dramas, has passed away at 80. His longtime manager, Bob McGowan, confirmed the death Saturday after learning the news from Vincent Curatola, a fellow cast member from the HBO series.
Pastore was discovered in his residence on City Island in New York after failing to make contact with associates for several days. McGowan said he had been attempting to reach the actor regarding a potential acting opportunity at the time of his death.
The Bronx native earned his greatest acclaim for a 30-episode arc on “The Sopranos” as Salvatore “Big Pussy” Bonpensiero, the conflicted associate of protagonist Tony Soprano who becomes an informant for federal authorities. His extensive filmography included notable roles in 1990 films “Goodfellas” and “Awakenings,” launching a prolific career in cinema that began in the 1980s.
Pastore, who grew up in New Rochelle, New York, served in the Navy during the Vietnam War and later earned a degree from Pace University. McGowan remembered his client as exceptionally charitable and generous. He is survived by his daughter, Renee Pastore.
