Bill Maher Criticizes Fauci Over COVID Origins Following Senate Testimony

Comedian and HBO host Bill Maher launched a sharp critique of former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Anthony Fauci on Friday’s episode of “Real Time,” just three days after Fauci invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination 111 times during a Wednesday Senate hearing. Maher accused Fauci of making false statements regarding the origins of the coronavirus, which has caused more than seven million confirmed deaths globally. The television personality said Fauci was “caught in actual lies” and argued the virus’s origins represented the hearing’s most significant issue.

Maher specifically targeted Fauci’s early assertions that the virus jumped from animals to humans at a wet market in Wuhan, China, characterizing such claims as inconsistent with evidence later revealed. The comedian noted that Fauci initially dismissed the laboratory leak theory as a conspiracy theory while privately expressing different views in written communications with other scientists. Maher stated: “He was telling people up front when it first began [that] it was from the wet markets. It could not — that’s a conspiracy theory — if you say it escaped from the lab,” while maintaining “he knew better.”

The central focus of Fauci’s Senate testimony involved questions about his institute’s funding of “gain-of-function” research conducted in China—a controversial method where scientists genetically modify viruses for study purposes. Maher characterized the debate surrounding such research as legitimate while suggesting Fauci’s funding decisions warranted scrutiny. He stated the practice represented “a reasonable debate” but added: “I think that’s what did happen,” regarding potential laboratory release of the virus.

Maher contended that rational discussion of the lab leak theory became impossible due to concerns about racial sensitivity rather than scientific merit. He argued that critics labeled the lab leak hypothesis as racist because it involved a Chinese facility, creating an unfounded taboo that prevented open debate. The comedian said: “You couldn’t say it escaped from the lab, because that was the racist point of view somehow,” describing the reaction as “ridiculous.”

Maher’s comments represent a departure from many left-leaning media figures who have historically defended Fauci’s pandemic response and public health guidance. Curtis Houck, managing editor of NewsBusters at the Media Research Center, told Fox News Digital that Maher demonstrated willingness to engage in objective analysis that mainstream media outlets had avoided. Houck criticized other journalists for either dismissing Fauci’s damaging diary entries or declining to cover them, saying the press had “made the decision to be joined at the hip with Fauci, even as his credibility has dropped off a cliff.”
