Washington Post Opinion Editor Adam O’Neal Departs After One Year, Catching Leadership Off Guard

Adam O’Neal, who took the helm of The Washington Post’s opinion section just over a year ago, informed staff Friday that he would be stepping down effective August 31. His memo, obtained by Fox News Digital, credited the team with achieving significant editorial and financial milestones during his tenure while thanking leadership including owner Jeff Bezos and Acting CEO Jeff D’Onofrio.

O’Neal highlighted the opinion section’s transformation, noting improvements in audience engagement and sustainability metrics. He emphasized the department’s shift toward championing free markets and personal liberties while maintaining journalistic rigor and expanding its reach beyond traditional readers.

D’Onofrio released a statement praising O’Neal’s contributions, saying he had made the opinion section “more balanced in perspective, more financially sustainable and more accessible to readers than ever before.” The acting CEO indicated that a search for O’Neal’s successor would begin immediately.

Sources told Fox News Digital that Post leadership was caught completely unprepared by the announcement, with no prior indication of tensions between O’Neal and top executives. During an all-hands meeting with opinion staff, O’Neal characterized the move as a personal decision, leaving colleagues in shock.

O’Neal joined The Post in July 2023 from The Economist, where he worked as a correspondent, and previously held a position as editorial page writer for The Wall Street Journal. His hiring followed Bezos’s mandate that the opinion pages promote “personal liberties and free markets,” a directive that prompted the immediate resignation of his predecessor, David Shipley.

In a September interview with Fox News Digital, O’Neal acknowledged The Post’s predominantly liberal readership concentrated in blue states while outlining his vision to diversify perspectives and rebuild trust among skeptical audiences. He described his mission as hiring intellectually diverse voices from across the country to appeal to readers who had lost faith in mainstream media institutions.
