Florida Atlantic University researchers have documented a significant shift in blacktip shark migration patterns along the U.S. East Coast, with the species traveling farther north during summer months as ocean temperatures rise. Using aerial surveys and satellite tracking data collected over more than a decade, scientists have observed many blacktip sharks reaching as far north as Long Island, New York, by late summer—areas where such encounters were historically less common.
The expansion of the sharks’ traditional range is driven by warming water temperatures that allow them to remain in northern waters longer before their winter return migration to southern regions. Dr. Stephen Kajiura, a Florida Atlantic University professor who has studied blacktip sharks for approximately 15 years, explained that the species seeks optimal water temperatures around 72 degrees Fahrenheit, similar to human preferences for climate-controlled environments.
Blacktip sharks pose particular concern for beachgoers because they frequently swim close to shore in shallow waters where swimmers and surfers operate. Kajiura noted that this species represents the highest likelihood of human-shark encounters compared to other shark varieties in the region.
A separate Florida Atlantic University study published in the Journal of Coastal Research found that beach nourishment projects may also influence blacktip shark distribution and behavior. Researchers discovered that murky water conditions created by nourishment activities could impair the sharks’ hunting abilities and potentially increase accidental encounters with people.
Despite these findings, researchers emphasize that actual shark encounters remain extremely rare and should not deter beach recreation. Kajiura advised the public that the statistical risk of negative shark interaction remains minimal and encouraged continued enjoyment of Florida’s coastal waters.
