Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson announced Friday that Deputy Chief Andre Sayles will serve as interim police chief, a decision made in the wake of Police Chief Shon Barnes’ resignation. The leadership transition comes after a mass shooting at the Bite of Seattle food festival at Seattle Center on Sunday left two people dead and four others wounded.
At a Friday morning press conference, Wilson explained her rationale for selecting Sayles, citing his prior experience as a police chief and his reputation among department ranks. “He served as chief of police in Wisconsin, where he led with a community-focused approach that strengthened both public safety and community trust,” Wilson said. She emphasized that Sayles has earned the respect of Seattle police officers and possesses the capability to address immediate operational needs.
Barnes submitted his resignation Thursday after Wilson requested it Wednesday, according to a statement delivered through his attorney. The former chief acknowledged the decision represented “the best path forward for the city, which is still reeling from the shock and pain caused by the tragic events at the Seattle Center.”
Investigators have made one arrest related to the shooting and recovered one deceased suspect believed to have participated. Sayles pledged to continue investigating the incident and pursue any additional suspects potentially involved in the violence.
Wilson initiated a formal search for Barnes’ permanent successor, stating the position will prioritize operational excellence and organizational change. A search committee representing various Seattle communities will guide the recruitment process, she said, as the city seeks a leader capable of earning officer respect while implementing needed cultural and procedural improvements.
In response to public safety concerns raised following the festival shooting, Sayles announced the police department will increase staffing levels at remaining major summer events throughout the city.
