Major League Baseball’s trade deadline arrives August 3 at 6 p.m. ET, with contending teams preparing to strengthen their rosters ahead of the postseason push. Two significant factors—the expiration of the collective bargaining agreement and an unusual shortage of sellers—are poised to fundamentally alter how teams approach acquisition strategy this year, according to World Series champion Joe Girardi.
The addition of a third wild-card playoff spot in 2022 has fundamentally changed the competitive landscape, leaving only seven of 30 teams mathematically eliminated from postseason contention. With 23 teams still within 5.5 games of the final wild-card berth, most franchises remain reluctant to trade away established players while maintaining legitimate playoff hopes, creating a bottleneck in available talent.
Girardi told Fox News Digital that the scarcity of sellers will give those teams choosing to rebuild an outsized advantage in negotiations. “There’s probably not going to be a lot of people traded from the other 23 teams. So everyone’s going to be in the hunt for those guys on those seven teams,” Girardi said, predicting aggressive competition for assets from Cincinnati, New York, San Francisco, Colorado, Los Angeles Angels, Oakland, and Kansas City.
The impending CBA expiration introduces additional uncertainty that may push teams toward aggressive win-now strategies. Girardi expects franchises to take greater risks, believing owners and players will ultimately reach agreement despite the looming deadline. “Teams get older, they figure that their window is closing. Let’s go for it now because we don’t know what’s going to happen next year,” he explained.
Detroit’s two-time Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal has emerged as a prime trade target, with Los Angeles, Milwaukee, and Tampa Bay reportedly interested. San Diego’s All-Star closer Mason Miller represents another possible acquisition, though the Padres remain 1.5 games back in the Wild Card race.
