Former President Barack Obama has thrown his support behind Josh Turek, an Iowa state representative seeking the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate. In a video endorsement, Obama appeared alongside Turek playing a modified version of the basketball game horse, urging voters to send Turek to Washington as the clip concluded.
Turek, a four-time Paralympian in wheelchair basketball with two gold medals to his name, will face Republican U.S. House member Ashley Hinson in the general election. The matchup emerged after Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst announced she would not seek re-election in 2026, prompting Hinson to declare her Senate candidacy the same day.
President Donald Trump endorsed Hinson for the Senate seat just days after her announcement, cementing the contest as a marquee race between the two parties. Obama highlighted his own Iowa success in his endorsement video, referencing his victories in the state during the 2008 and 2012 presidential campaigns.
