Harris’s $8.15M California Home Sits in Nearly All-White Neighborhood, Drawing Scrutiny

The former vice president’s newly acquired beachfront property in Point Dume, California raises questions about her residential choices given her long-standing advocacy on housing equity. The 4,000-square-foot home, purchased for $8.15 million, features ocean views, wine storage, private golf amenities and a five-car garage in an exclusive seaside enclave. Census data from 2019 indicates the neighborhood falls within a tract that is approximately 0.2% Black and 94% White, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey.

Harris has repeatedly emphasized throughout her career the value of living within Black communities and among African American peers. In a 2019 interview with the Washington Post, she reflected on her experience at Howard University, a historically Black institution in Washington, D.C., describing the significance of being surrounded by substantial numbers of Black Americans her own age. She contrasted this with her earlier years spent in predominantly White social circles and communities.

The property’s location comes as some have criticized Point Dume’s barriers to public beach access for people of color. Two non-White surfers described the community in a 2025 review as maintaining exclusionary practices despite its public image as a laid-back coastal town. Harris spent much of her professional life working to eliminate similar housing obstacles.

As California’s attorney general in 2012, Harris joined a Supreme Court filing supporting Fair Housing Act enforcement against policies with disparate racial impact regardless of stated intent. During her 2020 presidential campaign, she outlined a $100 billion assistance proposal for families in historically redlined neighborhoods. As vice president, she championed Biden administration initiatives targeting racial discrimination in home appraisal practices.

Harris has faced periodic criticism regarding her racial identity and geographic background. Questions emerged during her 2020 campaign about her authenticity as an African American given her Indian and Jamaican heritage and upbringing in affluent, predominantly White areas. The 2024 campaign resurface these questions when Donald Trump alleged she exploited her Black identity politically.

The former vice president spent her formative years primarily in Berkeley, California, before moving to Montreal as a teenager with her mother—both communities were substantially White. She later identified Oakland, California, as her hometown during the 2024 election despite limited childhood residence there. Harris’s husband, Doug Emhoff, is White.

Recent media reports have speculated about Harris potentially pursuing the presidency in 2028. A representative for Harris declined to comment when contacted by Fox News Digital on Wednesday regarding the residence purchase.
