Law enforcement in Miami arrested Demetrius Byrd, a former wide receiver for Louisiana State University, following an altercation aboard a public transit bus. The incident involved a confrontation between Byrd and another passenger that escalated when authorities say he displayed a knife and made threatening remarks to bystanders, asking “Who wants to die?” according to court documentation.

Byrd now faces charges of aggravated assault involving a deadly weapon and is being held on $5,000 bond. His arrest comes as an outstanding domestic violence warrant was also identified in connection with his name through court records available online.

During his time at LSU, Byrd became known for a pivotal moment in college football history when he caught a game-winning 22-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Matt Flynn against Auburn in 2007 with just one second remaining. The reception gave LSU a 25-24 victory and helped propel the Tigers toward their national championship campaign that season.

Despite his collegiate accomplishments, Byrd’s professional career never materialized following a severe car accident one week prior to the 2008 NFL Draft. The San Diego Chargers selected him in the seventh round, but he never played a regular season NFL game. Over his 27-game LSU career, Byrd totaled 72 receptions for 1,134 yards and 11 touchdowns.
