The WNBA faced criticism this week after its official social media accounts promoted a betting exchange between Dallas Wings guard Paige Bueckers and Atlanta Dream forward Angel Reese that appeared to violate the league’s own gambling regulations. The two players agreed to a $400 wager on an upcoming matchup during All-Star Weekend, which the league’s social media team documented and shared across its official channels.
Section 5(c) of the WNBA’s Collective Bargaining Agreement explicitly prohibits players from wagering money or anything of value on the outcome, score, or aspect of any league competition, with violations subject to fines, suspensions, or disqualification. The league’s promotion of the exchange appeared to contradict this established rule, drawing swift online backlash for the apparent oversight.
The post was removed after the controversy intensified online, though the damage had already spread across social media platforms. Commissioner Cathy Engelbert now faces questions about whether disciplinary action will follow against the two players or whether the league will take no further action, creating uncertainty about enforcement of its gambling policies.
The incident highlighted a contradiction within the WNBA’s recent strategy, as the league has spent years promoting legalized sports betting through broadcast integrations and sportsbook partnerships.
