Barnes was attending the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives’ conference in Dallas, Texas, at the time of the violence.

When confronted by reporters about his whereabouts during the shooting, Barnes responded defensively, stating he cannot predict when gun violence will occur. The police chief became visibly agitated when questioned about reports that he frequently spends weekends outside Seattle with his family in Chicago, requiring staff intervention during the exchange.

Barnes pushed back forcefully against claims of regular absences, denying allegations that he leaves the city nearly every weekend. He emphasized his commitment to Seattle’s communities and noted financial constraints would prevent such frequent travel, while acknowledging he travels less often than preferred to be with his family.
