A retired Jupiter man tearfully recounted how he became victim to a sweeping financial fraud after developing what he believed was a genuine romantic relationship with a woman named “Aileen.” The scam, which federal authorities classify as “pig butchering,” cost Karl Geissler $700,000 and left him living in a hotel and relying on a bicycle for transportation after he sold his inherited home and vehicle to fund fraudulent investments.
Geissler said the perpetrator initially contacted him via text message meant for someone else. After months of building rapport, “Aileen” revealed she was Singapore-born and living in Los Angeles, then introduced him to alleged investment opportunities through her aunt’s connections to gold market analysts. The scheme began with a modest $500 investment before escalating into hundreds of thousands of dollars channeled through cryptocurrency platforms.
The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s Office of Inspector General has issued warnings about pig butchering scams, which operate through gradual confidence-building and pressure to make escalating monetary contributions—typically in cryptocurrency—to shell companies before perpetrators vanish with victim funds. Scammers typically initiate contact through text messages, dating applications, and social media before switching to voice-over-internet protocol applications to deepen trust.
Geissler filed a report with Jupiter Police and publicly shared his experience to alert others and solicit assistance. The FDIC identified common tactics including instructions to open accounts on investment websites, wire transfers to shell entities, threats of relationship termination if victims refuse additional deposits, and withdrawal obstacles including suspicious fees and account lockouts that prevent fund recovery.
