Glen Hansard, the Irish musician and actor who won an Academy Award for his work in the 2007 film “Once,” died Wednesday morning in a motorcycle accident on the outskirts of Dublin. He was 56 years old. His management company, ATC Management, confirmed the death to Irish broadcaster RTE, saying his family was “deeply shocked and heartbroken.”
Dublin police reported that a man in his 50s was fatally injured in a single-vehicle motorcycle crash in Lucan before 4:30 a.m. Wednesday. Emergency responders treated the victim at the scene, but he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. Authorities did not initially identify the victim.
Hansard’s career spanned music and film, beginning with a 1991 role in the Dublin-set movie “The Commitments.” His Oscar victory came in 2007 for the song “Falling Slowly,” which he performed in “Once” alongside Markéta Irglová. He was the longtime frontman for the rock band The Frames and co-founder of the duo The Swell Season.
Beyond his film work, Hansard released multiple solo albums. His 2015 album “Didn’t He Ramble” earned a Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album in 2016, cementing his status as one of Ireland’s most respected singer-songwriters.
