Halperin Draws Parallel Between Fauci Diary Coverage and Biden Press Handling, Alleges Media Complicity

During an appearance on “The Morning Meeting” podcast Wednesday, journalist and “2Way” host Mark Halperin drew a direct comparison between how mainstream outlets have covered Anthony Fauci’s released diaries and their treatment of former President Joe Biden’s cognitive abilities. Halperin contended that news organizations were instrumental in constructing and perpetuating what he characterized as a cover-up in both instances, citing consistent pro-Fauci and anti-Trump editorial approaches across major news outlets.

Halperin identified several critical questions the media has allegedly failed to adequately address, including whether Fauci misled the public, whether he supported gain-of-function research funding, and what he described as Fauci’s unhealthy fixation with celebrity status. The commentary emerged as Fauci faced questioning from Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Rand Paul on Wednesday regarding his diary entries, which Paul had released earlier that week.

Halperin specifically targeted CNN’s Brian Stelter for his characterization of Fauci’s documented celebrity preoccupations as merely reflecting the “objectively wild speed” of a government scientist becoming internationally prominent. Halperin argued Stelter had an ethical obligation to examine the connections between Fauci and media figures rather than minimizing what he viewed as problematic narcissism.

Fauci’s diaries detail extensive interactions with prominent journalists, most notably CNN’s Jake Tapper, who appeared in the entries 41 times. According to the documents, Tapper provided Fauci advance questions for interviews and texted him to criticize rival news personalities and other doctors. In one July 2020 entry, Fauci wrote that he and Tapper’s family were “friendship building” after a dinner in Washington.

The diary also documents Fauci coaching Tapper before an interview with pediatrician Brett Giroir on CNN’s “State of the Union,” and captured Tapper’s frustration when President Trump tweeted criticism following the segment. Other CNN personalities mentioned included Dana Bash and Andrea Mitchell, while figures from ABC, NBC, and Fox News also appeared throughout the documented exchanges.

During his Senate appearance, Fauci repeatedly declined to answer Paul’s questions, invoking his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. When contacted for comment, CNN directed inquiries to Stelter’s published newsletter response rather than providing additional statement.
