Republican Scrutiny Focuses on Democratic-Linked Staff at Smithsonian Leadership Levels

The Smithsonian Institution faces intensifying Republican oversight as investigators identify roughly two dozen senior staff members and curators with prior employment at Democratic offices or progressive organizations. A Fox News Digital examination of public biographies and social media records reveals a pattern suggesting that individuals emphasizing diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives have shaped hiring decisions across the sprawling museum and research organization.

Conservative lawmakers have accused the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History of leveraging taxpayer resources to advance progressive narratives centered on race, gender and social justice while downplaying the nation’s founding principles and historical achievements. The Trump administration and Republican lawmakers have specifically targeted exhibits addressing gender identity and diversity programming, arguing that curatorial choices reflect political activism rather than objective historical scholarship.

Roshni Lal, who assumed the directorship of the Smithsonian’s office of academic appointments and internships in November 2023, previously held diversity and inclusion leadership roles at multiple organizations focused on anti-racist hiring practices and social justice frameworks. Her predecessor in the position, who served for 11 years beginning in 2012, had prior experience with the Clinton White House, Obama State Department and then-Senator Hillary Clinton’s office.

Several curators at the National Museum of American History center their scholarly work on race, identity and social justice themes, reflecting these perspectives in museum exhibits and institutional programming. The division overseeing presidential exhibits also supervises the Smithsonian’s Center for Restorative History, which employs “restorative justice” principles and operates a “decolonization working group” alongside projects documenting Black Lives Matter activism.

The Smithsonian countered criticism by stating it operates as a nonpartisan institution where hiring decisions rest solely on candidate qualifications. The organization noted that its chief legal officer worked in the Bush administration and its chief of staff clerked for Chief Justice John G. Roberts and Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

Congressional Republicans conducted two hearings investigating allegations of left-wing narrative promotion and have signaled intentions to leverage spending authority to restrict Smithsonian funding and pressure removal of contested exhibits. Heritage Foundation senior fellow Mike Gonzalez testified on July 21 that institutional leaders have transformed the organization into “a hothouse for anti-American activism” based on “deeply Marxist and Gramscian constructs.”

Campaign finance records examined by Fox News Digital showed that only approximately 1% of political donations from individuals identifying as Smithsonian employees supported Republican committees during the current election cycle. The Smithsonian employs roughly 6,400 full-time staff members, though Fox News Digital’s review focused on publicly identified leadership positions and curators at the National Museum of American History.
