Users in cities like New York, Washington D.C., and Los Angeles increasingly lead with ideological statements rather than interests or relationship goals, according to a psychotherapist who has tracked dating trends for nearly two decades.

An SSRS survey reveals a stark partisan divide in how seriously daters weight political compatibility. More than half of Democratic dating app users consider shared political beliefs very important in selecting matches, compared to roughly one quarter of Republicans and independents. This asymmetry suggests that political screening functions as a mandatory compatibility test for one segment while remaining peripheral for another.

Mental health professionals caution that political ideology operates as a social performance metric rather than a meaningful values assessment. A client in her early 30s rejected a potential match solely because he had not listed pronouns in his profile and expressed moderate fiscal conservatism, despite having no evidence of dishonesty or unkindness. Similar patterns emerge among male users who eliminate women based on religious affiliation or insufficient political engagement.

Relationship experts note that political alignment provides no predictive value for long-term partnership success. Couples who share identical views on major policy issues frequently report relationship dissatisfaction rooted in communication failures, infidelity, and contempt—factors entirely independent of electoral preferences. Removing political declarations from profiles may reveal a larger pool of genuinely compatible partners previously filtered out by ideological screening.
