Federal Agents Seize Over 1,000 Pounds of Cocaine at California-Mexico Border Crossing

U.S. federal agents discovered more than half a ton of cocaine concealed beneath the floorboards of a commercial truck at the Calexico Port of Entry, one of the largest narcotics busts in Southern California this year. Officers from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Homeland Security Investigations, and the Drug Enforcement Administration conducted an X-ray inspection that revealed structural irregularities in the vehicle. The cocaine haul, comprising 366 packages weighing approximately 454 kilograms, carries an estimated street value exceeding $20 million.

Jose Manuel Lopez, a 44-year-old Mexican national driving the truck, was taken into custody and faces federal charges of importing cocaine into the United States. Prosecutors characterized the seizure as “a tremendous amount of drugs, even by the standards of this district” in court filings seeking to detain Lopez without bail. A narcotics detection dog confirmed the presence of illicit substances, prompting agents to remove wooden floorboards from the trailer, which had been ostensibly transporting 269 bundles of rebar.

The seizure ranks as the second-largest cocaine bust in the Southern District of California during the current year, according to the Department of Justice. A May seizure at a cross-border drug tunnel yielded more than one ton of cocaine valued at approximately $45 million. If convicted, Lopez faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in federal prison with a possible life sentence.

Lopez entered a not guilty plea during his initial federal court appearance on Tuesday, with a detention hearing scheduled for August 3.
