Man Arrested After Fire, Vandalism at Renowned Medjugorje Shrine in Bosnia

Bosnian authorities have taken a man into custody following an overnight attack on the Shrine of Our Lady in Medjugorje, one of Catholicism’s most significant pilgrimage destinations. The incident involved both vandalism and arson at the sacred site, with investigators still working to establish the suspect’s identity and determine his motive, Vatican News reported Tuesday.

Officers responding to a call at approximately 4:30 a.m. on July 27 discovered the face and hands of a Virgin Mary statue on Apparition Hill coated with black paint. The words “Devil in a skirt” had been spray-painted in English on the statue’s pedestal, while additional graffiti covered the figure’s hands. An outdoor altar adjacent to St. James Church was also set ablaze, with surveillance footage apparently showing a man applying what authorities believe was gasoline before igniting the structure.

The timing of the attack comes just days ahead of Medjugorje’s annual youth prayer festival, which is projected to attract more than 50,000 pilgrims globally. In a statement released Tuesday, the Medjugorje Parish Office condemned the incidents while calling for responses rooted in “prayer, fasting, and forgiveness” rather than retaliation.

Parish officials announced that repairs and cleanup efforts began immediately to restore the affected prayer sites before the festival. The shrine remains operational with its standard schedule of Masses and services continuing as planned, located approximately 85 miles southwest of Sarajevo.

Medjugorje achieved international prominence after six young people reported seeing apparitions of the Virgin Mary there in 1981. The Vatican formally approved continued devotion at the site earlier this week, solidifying its status as one of Roman Catholicism’s most recognized pilgrimage destinations despite decades of ecclesiastical controversy surrounding it.
