The Soros family has committed more than $1 million through political action committees aimed at electing progressive prosecutors during the current election cycle, according to campaign finance filings. Despite predictions that Soros-backed district attorneys would fade from prominence following a series of electoral defeats spanning 2022 through 2024, financial records indicate the liberal philanthropic network is mounting a renewed effort to reshape criminal justice systems across the country.
Democracy PAC, now overseen by Alex Soros following his father George Soros’s transfer of control in 2023, directed approximately $1.7 million into Justice & Public Safety PAC between March 2025 and April 2026. The substantial funding signals a deliberate strategy to influence local criminal justice policy ahead of the 2026 election cycle, notwithstanding significant voter pushback that unseated or replaced dozens of prosecutors previously backed by the network.
Previous Soros-funded prosecutors have drawn intense criticism from conservative observers who argue their policies resulted in increased crime. Notable figures include former Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price, former Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon, Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner, former St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner and former Cook County State Attorney Kim Foxx. During 2024, 12 of 25 ballot-facing Soros-linked prosecutors were either defeated or recalled, according to the Law Enforcement Legal Defense Fund.
Gascon faced internal rebellion when prosecutors voted nearly unanimously to support his recall as crime climbed, while Krasner drew criticism for presiding over a historic homicide spike while reducing prosecutions. These setbacks have not deterred continued investment by the Soros network, which maintains the $25 billion philanthropic apparatus controls substantial resources for future campaigns.
Justice & Public Safety PAC recently provided six-figure support to Norfolk Commonwealth Attorney Ramin Fatehi during Virginia’s 2025 election, offering a preview of the organization’s approach moving forward. Fatehi has advocated for eliminating cash bail, resisting prosecution of shoplifting cases and joining a prosecutor coalition opposing federal immigration enforcement actions.
George Soros has argued that progressive prosecutors improve public safety by addressing root causes of crime rather than pursuing lengthy incarceration. He cited disproportionate jailing rates for Black Americans as an injustice requiring systemic reform rather than punitive approaches.
