Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona contends that President Donald Trump’s economic agenda is propelling Democratic voters toward progressive candidates, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, who recently topped a 2028 Democratic primary preference poll. Kelly made the assertion during an interview with Fox News Digital, suggesting that voter discontent with Trump’s approach to wealth distribution is fueling support for far-left alternatives within the Democratic Party.
A New Hampshire poll showed Ocasio-Cortez leading the Democratic field for 2028, with Kelly placing third at 9% support, trailing behind Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and ahead of California Gov. Gavin Newsom and former Vice President Kamala Harris. The survey reflects a broader trend in which candidates affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America have achieved success in recent primary elections, demonstrating the expanding clout of the party’s progressive faction.
Kelly attributed Ocasio-Cortez’s appeal to frustration over economic inequality, noting that the wealthiest 1% now controls more wealth than the middle class. He cited Federal Reserve data from 2021 showing the top 1% of households hold more wealth than the bottom 60% combined, a distinction not seen since tracking began in 1989. Kelly argued this disparity explains why voters are gravitating toward candidates promising different economic approaches.
The senator has indicated he is considering a presidential run in 2028, telling NBC News recently that the decision remains under discussion with his family with “plenty of time” to determine his course. Kelly criticized Trump more broadly during his Fox News Digital remarks, accusing the president of prioritizing himself and his family while neglecting ordinary Americans and allowing “corruption off the charts.”
Trump has defended his economic policies as benefiting middle-class Americans through tax relief and reduced living costs, emphasizing efforts to extend the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, eliminate taxes on tips and overtime, and lower energy expenses. Kelly’s comments suggest Democrats critical of the administration believe these policies have had the opposite effect on working families.
