The Cincinnati Reds experienced a brutal sequence during the opening game of a doubleheader against the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday when their successful challenge decision ultimately led to a devastating grand slam. With the bases loaded and Kyle Manzardo at bat in the top of the first inning, Reds pitcher Chase Burns delivered a pitch high and inside that appeared to strike Manzardo’s forearms, prompting the home plate umpire to rule it a hit by pitch and award a run.
The Reds challenged the call and won, wiping out the run and resetting the at-bat to a 2-2 count. Manzardo then fouled off one pitch before launching the next offering into the outfield bleachers for a grand slam that would have been impossible under the original ruling. The Guardians went on to win the first game 6-5, with that early blast proving to be the decisive margin despite a late Reds comeback attempt.
